I love fashion, clothing, beauty and the rest as much as the next person. However, during my degree, I’ve had a little more of an insight into the industry and have learnt more about the ugly side of fashion that is often swept under the rug.

If you’ve read my post on Slow Fashion, then you’ll already know that it was a book called ‘Slow Fashion: Aesthetics over Ethics’ that really peaked my interest in the topic, and if not, head over and take a look as it will explain the concept of slow fashion and discuss this topic in more detail. So, today I thought I’d compile a list of some of the facts I’ve learnt over the years that really shocked me and made me think twice about my shopping habits, so here they are:

I can’t say that I am a sustainable shopper, although it is one of my goals for 2018 to make more of a conscious effort to be one. However, I think it’s incredibly important that people learn more about these issues and start to do something about it. These issues are not only to do with harming the environment and running out of resources but also about the ethics of the industry, the lack of trust for retailers and the poor treatment of workers all over the globe. We have to do something to make a difference, even if you start of with making the slightest or share these facts with your friends you’re helping to spread the word and educate the future generation. I’m currently putting together a post on how to be more sustainable n 2018, so keep your eyes peeled if this is a topic of interest to you!

  1. This was really interesting to read. I can’t believe how much water it takes to make a t-shirt or to even put together clothes. The fast fashion doesn’t surprise me. I’ve noticed that paying an extra £10 on many items can hugely increase the quality. Anytime that I have purchased super cheap, it’s lasted a super short time.
My only shocking facts are down to modelling and payments. So many people work in this industry for free. Fantastic post!

  2. When I actually read a little bit more on fashion industry and the over all production I started to take good care of my clothes and buy in thrift stores, because just the amount of water that goes into process is insane. xx

  3. Great read, and the waste in retail and fashion is ridiculous! I am definitely going to be more environmentally conscious this year, and my shopping and clothing habits will be a part of it! xoxo
